Defense Electronics Supplier API Doubles in Size with Kuchera Acquisition

API Technologies, a Ronkonkoma, NY-based defense supplier of electronic and commmunications components, is doubling in size with its recent $24 million acquisition of the Kuchera Group of Companies (KGC) , including Kuchera Defense Systems. The combined company will have revenues of $120 million. Kuchera supplies printed circuit boards, robotic systems , unmanned aircraft, electro-mechanical assemblies and final systems integration to the defense, aerospace and communications industries… (more…)

Elbit to Supply TVDL Systems for USMC AH-1W Helicopter

AH-1W, hard left (click to view full) Elbit Systems of America, a Fort Worth, TX-based subsidiary of Israel’s Elbit Systems, received a $15.6 million contract from US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) to supply Tactical Video Data Link (TVDL) systems for the US Marine Corps’ AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopter. The TVDL will provide helicopter pilots with live UAV video and targeting information combined with the ability to retransmit UAV and on-board sensor video to other aircraft and ground forces. The TVDL system weighs less than 8.5 lbs. The systems are planned to be operational in USMC AH-1W helicopters by the end of FY 2010… (more…)

Pearl Harbor Naval Base (click to view larger) The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Pearl Harbor, HI awarded 6 indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity multiple-award contracts worth up to a combined $140.4 million to provide maintenance, repair and modernization of submarines homeported or transient through Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The winners of the submarine maintenance contracts are: AMSEC in Virginia Beach, VA (N32253-10-D-0001); BAE Systems Hawaii Shipyards in Honolulu, HI (N32253-10-D-0002); Chugach Government Services in Anchorage, AK (N32253-10-D-0003); General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp. in Groton, CT (N32253-10-D-0004); Pacific Shipyards International in Honolulu, HI (N32253-10-D-0005); and QED Systems in Virginia Beach, VA (N32253-10-D-0006). Vice Adm. David Architzel has been appointed to head the Naval Air Systems Command at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.Architzel has been one of the Navy’s key speakers on Capitol Hill in recent years in his position as principal deputy assistant secretary of the Navy (research, development and acquisition) at the Pentagon.Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announced the move Tuesday. Naval Air Systems provides materiel support for naval aircraft and airborne weapons.Architzel flew S-3 Vikings for much of his career and served as the commanding officer of the carrier Theodore Roosevelt in 1996.

VSD to Provide Patrol Boat Training Systems to Iraqi Navy

Swiftships’ 35-meter coastal patrol boat (click to view larger) VSD, a Virginia Beach, VA-based subsidiary of QED Systems, received a $23 million contract from prime contractor Swiftships Shipbuilders to provide the Iraqi Navy with training and training systems. Swiftships Shipbuilders received the prime contract (N61339-09-C-0034) on Oct. 1/09 to provide 35-meter patrol boat training in support of the Iraqi Navy. This followed a Sept 28/09 Swiftships contract to supply the Iraqi Navy with nine 35-meter patrol boats for $181 million. A VSD-led team will develop and deliver a full mission bridge trainer, a small arms trainer, and a fire fighting trainer, as well as training support. The VSD team includes parent company QED Systems and Northrop Grumman Electronics Systems in Ocean Springs, MS… (more…)

BAE Systems to Supply 1,203 Night Vision Goggles to US Army

BAE’s LTLM Night Goggles BAE Systems’ Electronic Solutions division in Nashua, NH won a $42 million firm-fixed-price contract to supply 1,203 night vision goggles, known as laser target locator modules (LTLMs), to the US Army. The LTLMs are handheld goggles that enable soldiers to identify target locations while on foot, in daylight or at nighttime, and in obscured-visibility conditions such as fog and smoke. On Aug 10/09, BAE Systems announced that it had partnered with Vectronix to supply 200 LTLMs per month to the Army under a 5-year indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract worth up to $347 million… (more…)

Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems & Sensors in Mitchel Field, NY received a $62.9 million cost-plus incentive fee/ cost-plus-fixed-fee contract to provide navigation subsystem engineering support services to the US and UK fleet of Trident II (D5) ballistic missiles. The contract contains options, which if exercised, would bring its cumulative value to $141.4 million

ITT Provides Support to USAF Missile Ranges

WGS-2 Launches from Cape Canaveral (click to view full) ITT Corp.’s Systems Division in Cape Canaveral, FL received a $7 million task order to support the US Air Force’s Eastern and Western missile ranges. The task order was issued as part of a 10-year, $1.3 billion contract awarded to ITT by the USAF. The contract calls for ITT to modernize the USAF Spacelift Range System (SLRS). This work includes support for spacecraft launch, as well as ballistic missile and aeronautical testing. (more…)

Unmanned Aircraft Crews Strive to Support Warfighters

As Pentagon officials look for ways to increase intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support for warfighters, the Air Force’s first unmanned aircraft systems wing already is on the case in its quest to provide more and better intelligence through the systems they fly.
